Arab Actors Team Up in Fenak

"Fenak?" or "Where Are You?" is the name of a new sitcom due to air on Saudi television during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. The show brings together actors from the Arab world who explore social and political issues that concern audiences in the Middle East. Rosana Al Yamy, who is one of the show's founders tell us more. Rosana: "We wanted to put together something light that the audience would like. We wanted something funny that had a purpose, not just comedy for the sake of laughter." The show's creators features male and female actors from Jordan, Egypt, Syria and Saudi Arabia which will widen the range of issues discussed in the sitcom instead of focusing on one single country. Rosana: "We wanted to focus on having actors from different countries who could help us present issues from Syria, Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. We didn't want to just focus on Saudi issues." The Egyptian comedy actor, Talaat Zakaria, is also part of "Fenak" Zakaria: "In the Arab world we view this sort of art as entertainment -- when people return home and switch their televisions on, they want to unload themselves. It's not possible to have political issues chasing people everywhere. People have the right to sit in front of their televisions and laugh, see something different from what they experience in their daily lives. I am against art having the sole purpose of exposing political issues, promoting uprisings and political change. I think this is one of the roles of art but it should not always be such" The Jordanian actress, Mayes Hamdan, says that she liked the idea of this sitcom. Mayes: "Maybe there are many sitcoms in Egypt, Syria and outside Saudi Arabia, but this is the first time a sitcom has been made in Saudi Arabia, so I was very excited by the idea" The Saudi actor Gameel Al Ali said that the show will also touch upon family issues. Gameel: "We were able to take a deep look at some social and family problems. It's not necessarily that the problem exists within the family because it is possible to have problems that take place outside but end up having an impact on the family." Sitcoms are popular in the US and Europe and are starting to gain popularity in the Arab world. The actors of 'Fenak' have worked in a studio in Jeddah to film segments of the 30-episode series. Each episode will be 20 minutes long. The show is directed by the Saudi director Faisal Yamani and will appear on Saudi Channel One during Ramadan.
